Super Mouse

Today I read a short story called Super Mouse. In this short story it talks about a smart mouse named Doogie. Doogie scores really high on intelligence tests, can find hidden objects, and he can find his way through complex mazes. Doogie's genes were altered before he was born that's why he is so smart. Dr. Joseph Tsien altered Doogie's memory genes therefore he was born with better memories. Since the human brain and a mouse's brain have the same structure they work on mice. Doctors now think they might be able to help humans with memory loss.

Dragon Ball Z

Last Friday, I read another part of DBZ. After the 2 guys ambushed Gohan they flew away and the Lord of Lords chased after them along with the Z fighters. While they were chasing these men they learned that they had a new foe waiting for them. It was a warlock that had control of one of the most dangerous beings in the universe named Majin Buu.

Dragon Ball Z

Last Thursday I read part of my DBZ book. The part that I read was when the Z fighters (Goku, Vegeta, Kuririn, Gohan) were at the tournament. They were in the middle of a fight when suddenly to of the other tournament competitors ambushed Gohan. They sucked the energy out of him and flew away.

Right On The Money

Today I read a passage about money management and the impulse to spend your money on things that are not important. In this passage it talks how having a budget is good for you and your future. If you have a budget it will be easier for you to get things that you NEED instead of just buying things that you WANT.

Basketball Injury

Today I read a short story about a boy named Josh getting hurt in basketball. Josh was hesitating on shooting the ball, so he shot it so hard that it bounced back and hit him in the chest. The ball hit him so  hard it knocked the wind out of him. Seconds later josh started breathing and then minutes later he passed out. We carried him home and my mom rushed him to the emergency room. The doctor took x-rays of Josh's chest. The doctor said that Josh's chest was caved in a little bit, but he was able to go home and that he would be okay.

Caught in Gambling's Grip

Today I also read another passage about gambling. Lisa Hoffman was a compulsive gambler. She was excited when she turned 18 because she could go into casino's. Lisa's addiction to gambling became worse and worse. Lisa soon ended up taking hundred's of dollars from her fathers wallet, she then started stealing money from her job. Lisa's dad started hiding his wallet and burning her pay checks. Lisa soon went to Gamblers Anonymous and found out why gambling was so addictive. To this day Lisa will not step foot in a casino.

Money Matters

Today I read about how American teens flunked their money quiz. The quiz had questions that included insurance, taxes, savings, and debt. In 1997 57.3% of the students passed the test. In 2000 only 50% passed the test. Parents and school made it a priority to help the teens and in 2004 the scores increased by 2%.

The Day the Music Died

Today I read a short passage called The Day the Music Died. This passage was mainly about music getting banned all throughout public schools in Mishawaka, Indiana. They banned it on school buses and on school grounds. Soon high school kids started to protest so the ban was lifted for them but it was still in place for middle school and elementary school.

REACT- The solution to the music ban was not fair to everyone because everybody didn't listen to violent music and listening to music helps most kids concentrate better.

MTV Unplugge

Today I read an article titled MTV Unplugged. This article is about a cable company called TCA wanting to ban MTV. TCA only wants to do this because they think the music video's that MTV produces are offensive. Miguel Vasquez thought this wasnt a good desicion. He was right it wasnt, just because you dont like something doesnt mean it needs to be banned.

REACT- If i didnt like what a TV channel was showing then i would just change the channel and watch something else.

The Greatest Muhammad Ali

Today I read from page 46 to half of page 47. In reading this 1 and a half page i found out that Sonny Liston was an intimidating man. He was really buff with the power to knock you out in one punch. His style of boxing was intimidation, he stared at his opponent and sometimes finished the fight before it started. The young Cassius Clay was not intimidated by the World Heavyweight Champion. Between the 1st and 3rd rounds Cassius was winning until he was temporarily blinded in the 4th and 5th rounds. In those 2 round Liston had Cassius on the ropes but didn't seem to hurt him. In the 6th round Cassius unexpectedly regained his sight and began to punish Liston. Cassius beat him so bad he could go the 7th round.

QUOTE- " If he stands and fights, I will kill him. If he runs, I'll catch him and kill him," said Sonny Liston

The Greatest Muhammad Ali

Today I read from page 38 to page 46. These 8 pages are mostly about how sports writers were beginning to distance themselves from Clay. They only did this because of his political views. Clays political views were that human nature should be with there own kind and not mixed up.

QUOTE- " I believe its human nature to be with your own kind " said Cassius Clay on page 42.

Today I read pages 36 to 38. These 2 pages were about how Cassius admired Malcolm X. He always listened to what Malcolm had to say and he was even speaking at Muslim gatherings. He was studying Muslim to and wanted to be Muslim.

QUOTE- I'm sorry :( there was no quote between these 2 pages.

The Greatest Muhammad Ali

Today I read pages 28 to 36. In the 8 pages that i read today it talked about how Cassius Clay would predict which round he would knock someone out in. He was advised not to do this because if he didn't make his prediction true his fans would lose interest. He didn't take this advice and he did it again. This time he made his prediction come true.

QUOTE- " I'm changing the pick I made before. Instead of six, Doug goes in four " said Cassius Clay on page 30

The Greatest Muhammad Ali

Today I read from page 23 to page 28. It was mostly about the fighter that they thought Cassius would lose against. One of the boxer was Joe Louis and the other boxer was heavyweight champion Charles " Sonny " Liston. So today was really about the fighters that they thought Cassius would never stand a chance against.

QUOTE- " I had to fight him for financial reasons " said Archie Moore. Page 26

The Greatest Muhammad Ali

Today I read some more about Muhammad Ali. Today I read about how he was introduced to boxing. He was introduced to boxing when someone stole his expensive bike. He then became dedicated to boxing to teach the perpetrator a lesson. He trained 6 days a week. As he got older he won the gold medal in the Olympics for boxing at age 18. Young Cassius Clay was a great boxer, but he still had alot to learn.

The Greatest Muhammad Ali

Today I read about one of the greatest boxers ever. His name is Muhammad Ali. The section i read about so far was about his big fight with Sonny Liston. The commentators thought young Muhammad was scared of the hulk like man Sonny Liston, but he wasnt. When the fight started Ali was making the champion look like a fool. As the rounds kept going Ali kept showing up the champ. He was so fast that the champ couldnt even hit him until he was nearly blinded. The newcomer showed the Heavyweight Champion of The World up. Muhammad Ali became the new Heavyweight Champion of The World

HOMEBOYS TO THE RESCUE

Today's story is about 2 young gang member named Carlos and Tony. They joined gangs because either there friends or family members were in gangs. They both broke the law and got punished for it by going to jail. After getting out of jail they didn't think a job would hire them until they found HOMEBOY INDUSTRIES. Homeboy was an organization that helped troubled teens get jobs. Homeboy had a lot of different jobs to choose from.

REACT- I think Father Boyle's philosophy's works because if u have a job you wont be able to hang out and you wont be influenced by the wrong crowds.

Beyond Brave

This is about a girl named Bethany that survived a brutal attack. Bethany was attacked by a 15-foot tiger shark. She lost her left arm. Even tho she lost her arm she started surfing only a month after her brutal attack. Bethany is a true survivor that is really motivated.

REACT- I think Bethany was more brave when she decided to start surfing again. If it was me i would have been afraid to get back in the water.

CONNECTION- I have a friend that was hit by a car on his bike and broke his leg.
